Ensuring every student has a pathway to college and career

All4Ed is committed to leveraging and advancing the work of the U.S. Department of Educationโ€™s Office of Career, Adult, and Technical Educationโ€™s Unlocking Career Success (UCS) Initiative, a key aspect of the Departmentโ€™s former Raise the Bar strategy focused on high-quality college and career pathways for all students. ย

Under the leadership of former Assistant Secretary Dr. Amy Loyd, now CEO of All4Ed, the mission of this work was to create and expand access to high-quality opportunities that integrate and align high school, postsecondary education, and the world of workโ€”so that every student in our nationโ€™s public schools can pursue their purpose, earn a real living, and navigate the complexity of the future through modern, agile pathways that strengthen our communities and supercharge our workforce and our economy.ย

This initiative brought together the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, Commerce, Energy, and Transportation to support public and private sector leaders, government agencies, and other community-based organizations in aligning education, workforce development and economic development. The goal: to ensure students develop the skills, gain the experiences, and earn postsecondary credentials employers needโ€”and the economy demandsโ€”today and in the future. Dr. Loyd and her team at the U.S. Department of Education partnered with national leaders to create a suite of practical, actionable resources and playbooks for stakeholders looking to build and strengthen career pathways in their communities and states. All4Ed believes these resources are a valuable public good, co-created with those leading this work, and they elevate exemplars from across our great country. They should remain accessible to all of us, which is why we are sharing them here and will continue to update them to reflect the shifts in our rapidly changing world.

Our Why: The world has changed. Our education system needs to rise to the challenge.

  • A high school diploma is no longer sufficient for our young people to thrive into the future. Most good jobsโ€”those that provide a living wage, stability and predictability, benefits, worker voice, and career advancement opportunitiesโ€”require some form of postsecondary education and training. ย
  • When we say โ€œcollege and careerโ€ we do not necessarily mean four-year college for every student right out of high schoolโ€”but we also never want to foreclose on opportunities for our young people to pursue a four-year or advanced degree at any point during their lifetime, because the data still holds true that the more education you have, the more income you make. We believe in building comprehensive pathways that include the full range of postsecondary optionsโ€”whether that is a high-quality workforce credential, a Registered Apprenticeship, a two-year degree, a four-year degree, or beyond. ย ย
  • This demand for postsecondary education will only continue to grow, with 70% of jobs requiring education or training beyond high school by 2027.ย
  • Policymakers and educatorsโ€ฏneed to continueโ€ฏto lay a new foundation of college and career pathways in states and communities across the United Statesโ€”and build systems that prepare every student for college and career success.ย
  • As we continue to invest in public education, we need toโ€ฏbring togetherโ€ฏthe component parts of our K-12, postsecondary, and workforce systems in a coherent manner.ย

Our Goals are:

  • Dual enrollment creditsย
  • A career plan for their futureย
  • Work-based learning experiencesย
  • A workforce credential to provide momentum to complete a postsecondary certificate or degree and enter a good job that can launch a career.ย
