Washington, D.C. – “This morning’s horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis—claiming the lives of two young children and injuring 17 others, including 14 students—is yet another heartbreaking reminder that our nation continues to fail at protecting its most vulnerable. No parent should fear sending their child to school, and no educator should face the terror of violence in a place meant for learning and growth.

“Our hearts are with the families grieving the lives lost, those caring for the injured, and the entire Annunciation Catholic School community. Their pain is unimaginable—and it should not be theirs to bear alone. Yet we must ask – how many more children must be taken from us before our nation’s leaders act with the urgency this crisis demands?

“Gun violence has now become the leading cause of death for America’s children and teens, a grim reality that continues to shatter families and communities across the country. The loss and trauma inflicted today will be carried by these students, teachers, and families for a lifetime.

“We cannot accept this as normal. We call on Congress and state leaders to act with urgency to enact common-sense gun safety laws—such as universal background checks and stronger safeguards to prevent dangerous weapons from reaching our classrooms. At the same time, schools must be equipped with resources to provide mental health supports, trauma-informed care, and safe environments where children can heal and thrive.

“That means investing more, not less, in these opportunities. We cannot afford cuts to Medicaid funding, as President Trump championed in his so-called “Big Beautiful Bill Act.” Nor can we accept the Department of Education’s rollback of mental health funding that Congress provided on a bipartisan basis through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—legislation enacted, with tragic irony, in direct response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

“Our students deserve better. Our educators deserve better. Our nation deserves better.”
