Future Ready Librarians: Building Instructional Partnerships

On October 17, 2017, Future Ready Librarians held a webinar discussing how school librarians can support Future Ready Schools® (FRS)? The Future Ready Librarians (FRL) program responded to this challenge by identifying ways librarians can lead, teach, and support personalized student learning. The FRL framework is based on research-based components used by FRS.
This webinar looked at how teacher librarians can partner with educators to build and implement evidence-based curricula and assessments that integrate elements of deeper learning, critical thinking, information literacy, digital citizenship, creativity, innovation, and the active use of technology.
In Tacoma Public Schools (TPC), all teacher librarians (TLs) are encouraged to co-teach with classroom teachers integrating state and American Association of School Librarians standards though their Guided Inquiry Design (GID) framework. TPC provides TLs with extensive professional development and around collaborative practice and instructional technology integration. This year, TPC is starting a peer observation cycle where TLs can learn from one another and seek out excellent co-teaching models. Dawn Baughman and Charmaine Norton are examples of instructional partners who enrich the learning experiences of their students through co-teaching and using the GID framework.
In Leander Independent School District (LISD), librarians are instructional partners and teachers at each campus with training in leadership, information literacy, instructional design, technology integration, and literacy. LISD envisions a library program where the librarian provides curriculum and collaborative support for all stakeholders: students, teachers, administrators, and the community. At the heart of this is the implicit understanding that relationships are the foundational cornerstone of all that LISD does. Along with an attitude of excellent customer service, LISD strives to support instruction that is focused on engaging students in relevant learning to maximize academic growth.
Librarians, district leaders, and all educators should watch this webinar to learn more about the FRL program and how these librarian leaders embrace and build instructional partnerships to make a difference in their library, school community, and for the students with whom they work everyday. Presenters also answered questions submitted by online veiwers.
