On May 2, 2017, the Senate Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, in conjunction with the Alliance for Excellent Education held a briefing highlighting innovative approaches across the country to college and career pathways that have led to positive outcomes for traditionally underserved students.
Preparing students to be ready for both college and a career upon high school graduation requires a level of innovation that is not seen in most traditional high schools. Recent research shows that a large proportion of employers and college instructors say students fall short of the preparation necessary to succeed in college and the workplace. The role that CTE plays in bridging the gap between rigorous academic preparation and workforce readiness is essential to meet demands of the twenty-first-century economy.
During the briefing, panelists discussed
- the latest findings on secondary and postsecondary outcomes of students who participate in high-quality college and career pathways;
- implementation efforts in a rural California school district;
- the role of business and industry in supporting college and career pathways;
- the role of philanthropy in supporting college and career pathways;
- the role of service providers in delivering high-quality local and regional implementation of college and career pathways; and
- how current federal investments in CTE are being used to support this work.
Panelists also addressed questions from the live audience.
