Statement from Dr. Amy Loyd, CEO of All4Ed, on President Trump’s Call to Freeze Federal Spending
“I am deeply concerned about the uncertainty and confusion caused by President Trump’s federal spending freeze. This directive risks halting critical investments in schools, teachers, and programs that serve our nation’s most important resource: our children and youth.
“A federal judge temporarily blocked the freeze just minutes before it was set to take effect yesterday, citing the need to assess its far-reaching implications and its legal standing. The President’s action is not only harmful but also unconstitutional, as it attempts to bypass Congress’ authority over federal spending. This move will almost certainly prompt lawsuits, and the legal battle could ultimately reach the U.S. Supreme Court, further deepening the chaos and uncertainty for schools, students, and families.
“Recently, All4Ed released a national voter poll that unequivocally shows Americans—across political affiliations—believe in increasing, not decreasing, funding for our nation’s public schools. In fact, 72% of voters expressed strong support for public education, and 56% favor increasing federal funding to ensure all students have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. These findings underscore a clear mandate from the American public to invest in our students and their futures.
“Freezing federal grants would stall critical programs that help close opportunity gaps, support teachers, build the capacity of rural communities, and prepare students for college and careers. It would hinder efforts to address pressing challenges like learning recovery, workforce alignment, student health and nutrition, and ensuring access to high-quality and equitable education.
“We urge the President to reverse this policy and allow our educators to focus on what’s important – our nation’s students – not needless disruption and confusion coming from the Oval Office.”
