“Our hearts are broken as yet more senseless school shootings have stolen the lives of children, teachers, and school staff at Covenant School in Nashville and last week at East High School in Denver. Sadly, firearms are now the leading cause of death for American children and teens, surpassing car accidents and cancer. School shootings continue to plague America’s youth, families, and the dedicated educators who work to ensure safe and healthy learning environments. Once again, we urge Congress and state lawmakers to act with urgency to pass common sense gun laws, including strong background checks, that make it more difficult for guns to get into the wrong hands. Additionally, schools must receive appropriate resources to respond to mental wellness needs that are becoming more pronounced. Let’s demonstrate the commitment we have to America’s youth now.”
