“What’s on the books” is an occasional look at state laws and legislation that pertain to high schools and high school students.
- High School Dropouts: Although no legislation has been drafted yet, Minnesota lawmakers are considering the idea of keeping kids in school by denying them a driver’s license if they drop out before they turn age 18. –St. Cloud Times USA Today reports that several states including Alabama, Iowa, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia are considering similar measures.
- Juvenile Offenders: The Connecticut state legislature is considering a bill aimed at easing juveniles re-entry to school because many times young criminal offenders who are sentenced to jail often serve their time, win release, and then find they can’t easily reenroll at their original school. –The Connecticut Mirror
