PISA Day: Global Lessons for the U.S. Education System and Economy

The Alliance for Excellent Education presented sessions on the most recent results from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)—a test of reading literacy, mathematics, and science given every three years to fifteen-year-olds in the United States and more than seventy countries and economies worldwide—as well as a series of panel discussions on important lessons to learn from PISA 2015 and PISA’s impact on the education systems of various countries, including the United States.

PISA 2015: Global Lessons for the U.S. Education System and Economy

Andreas Schleicher, director for education and skills and special advisor on education policy to the Secretary-General at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), presented a detailed analysis of the newly released PISA results and lessons learned from deeper learning applications in high-performing nations.

The Economic Impact of Education Through the Lens of PISA

Eric Hanushek, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University, presented research showing how small improvements in students’ educational performance can have large impact on a nation’s economy. Linda Rosen, chief executive officer of Change the Equation, discussed the business community’s interest in and work to improve student outcomes, particularly as they relate to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

Using PISA for School and District Improvement: The OECD Test for Schools

The OECD Test for Schools is an annual, school-based version of PISA, that provides individual schools with information on how their fifteen-year-olds stack up against countries worldwide in reading, mathematics, and science. During this session, a panel of educators described how they use the OECD Test for Schools to drive improvement in their schools and districts.

This panel examined key policy takeaways from the 2015 PISA results, reviewed strategies to increase the global competitiveness of American students, and previewed opportunities and challenges in regard to the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act and the incoming Trump administration.
