2016 Linked Learning Opportunities: How the New Federal Education Law Supports Quality Linked Learning

Panelists
Christopher Cabaldon
, President, Linked Learning Alliance
Phillip Lovell, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy for Comprehensive High School Reform, Alliance for Excellent Education

On December 10, 2015, President Barack Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the bill to replace No Child Left Behind (NCLB). This new law provides greater flexibility to states to continue reforms that align with their recently adopted college- and career-ready standards. For the state of California, which has undergone changes in its own accountability system, ESSA provides an opportunity for school districts implementing Linked Learning pathways to continue to be innovative in their approach to ensure equitable outcomes for all students.

This webinar provided an overview of the vision for the Linked Learning field over the next five years; highlighted the recent recognition of the expansion of Linked Learning by the White House as a next-generation high school initiative; discussed how the new federal law could specifically support the implementation of high quality Linked Learning in California; and highlighted specific strategies that state and district leaders could use with the new federal policy to support, sustain, and advance the work of ensuring that all of California’s students are truly college and career ready upon graduating from high school.

Panelists also addressed questions submitted by viewers from across the nation.
