Getting and Staying on Track: The Economic Benefits of Ensuring Success for the Nation’s Most Off-Track Students

College and career readiness has been established by policymakers and practitioners as the new goal of the K–12 education system. However, for too many students who struggle just to complete high school, the promise of a college- and career-ready diploma is elusive, and only adds to the barriers already standing in their way of completing a postsecondary credential.

But what if all students—even those most at risk of falling off track and dropping out—could stay on track for success in both high school and post-secondary? On December 14, the Alliance for Excellent Education released new data projecting the economic benefits that would likely come to states if they were to ensure that even their most at-risk students achieved postsecondary success. Participants from the K–12 and higher education sectors shared examples of how this can be achieved, pushing past the traditional idea of alternative education programs and highlighting schools and programs designed to support dropouts and off-track students beyond high school completion and through to a postsecondary credential.
