In this video, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) talks about the adolescent literacy crises and the devastating effects of low high school graduation rates. Sen. Murray also discusses introducing the Literacy Education for All Results for the Nation or the LEARN Act which would call for a strong federal investment in high quality K-12 literacy instruction and ensure that teachers, schools, and literacy coaches have the tools and resources they need to help students succeed. Senator Murray asks for public support for this bill, explaining, “The students in our classrooms today will be the workers of tomorrow – trying to find jobs, struggling to make their way in a world in which literacy is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity.”
