National Indian Education Study 2007, Part I

Only 18 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native eighth graders read at or above proficient, and just 16 percent perform at the proficient level or better in math, according to this report from the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES). (Part II of the study will present the results of a survey of American Indian and Alaska Native students, their teachers, and their principals regarding their views on the relationship between culture and education.)
