High School State Cards: New York

Sep 23, 2013

State cards provide a statistical snapshot of high schools for each state in the nation and the District of Columbia. The cards include economic information, data on high school graduation and college completion rates, academic achievement, and states’ progress in building a longitudinal data system. Where applicable, statewide numbers are compared to the national average and include national rankings.

As the costs of doing business in education increases both in K-12 and higher education, the ability to offer high quality programs of study leading to gainful employment is a national concern. Educational institutions have traditionally lagged in terms of preparing young people for meaningful jobs upon graduation, whether high school entry level work or college placement. In recent years, the trend for young college grads has been more college, more loans and a graduate degree that may not lead to anything better than if they searched after 2 or 4 years. The federal level and even the state will do little in terms of the local need mainly because the filter on funding support had been inverted to support a national platform, not a local economy. Every sector of the country has its own set of challenges, so if it is to happen, a local collective must lead that charge.
