Washington, DC – Yesterday afternoon, the Obama administration released its blueprint to transform career and technical education currently authorized under the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 2006. In response, Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, made the following statement:

“For some people, ‘career and technical education’ is an afterthought when it comes to education reform. But when done properly, career and technical education keeps students engaged in their schoolwork, provides them with rigorous courses, offers them relevance to the world around them, and prepares them for additional education after high school—a must in today’s economy.

“If the nation is to prepare all students for college and a career, career and technical education must be an essential part of the education reform process and a key component of the nation’s education system. The Obama administration’s blueprint is an important step in that direction.

“The nation cannot afford to have some students prepared for college, others prepared for a career, and others prepared for neither. All students must be prepared to succeed in college and a career. The administration’s blueprint focuses on the benefits of these types of programs and ways to ensure that they are better aligned; more collaborative and coordinated; and responsive to the needs of students, educators, employers, industry, and labor. By promoting collaboration among K–12, postsecondary education, and employer stakeholders, the blueprint helps bring more key players to the table to deliver greater opportunities for high-quality career and technical education.

“The administration’s blueprint focuses on the strengths of career and technical education programs, getting beyond the false dichotomies of technical or academic education; knowledge or skills; rigor or relevance. A high-quality education in the twenty-first century that prepares students to succeed in college and a career requires all of these elements.

“The Alliance for Excellent Education looks forward to working with the U.S. Department of Education to ensure that within the administration’s blueprint for strengthening career and technical education, there is a continued focus on the most effective ways to provide students with the greatest needs, including disconnected youth and other young people who have been historically underserved by the education system, with equal access to high-quality career and technical education programs.”

The Alliance for Excellent Education is a Washington, DC-based national policy and advocacy organization that works to improve national and federal policy so that all students can achieve at high academic levels and graduate high school ready for success in college, work, and citizenship in the twenty-first century.
