Senators Brown, Clinton, Sanders Introduce Legislation to Increase Academic Achievement;
Alliance for Excellent Education President Bob Wise Issues Support Statement
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, has issued the following statement in support of legislation introduced by U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Hillary Clinton (D-NY), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to fund the creation and use of statewide data systems to track student progress over time:
“Senators Brown, Clinton, and Sanders are to be commended for introducing legislation that addresses a fundamental challenge to improving American education – providing accurate, up-to-date information about each student’s academic performance that is used to improve his or her individual learning experience.
“Modern data systems enable manufacturers to know exactly where thousands of parts are every minute, but in most states, educators can’t easily access or evaluate the data that is essential to informing decisions that will help to improve students’ academic achievement. From using test scores for quick feedback to help teachers focus on each student’s needs to knowing exactly how many students are graduating each year, developing good data systems is critical to improving education and making schools accountable. Simply having information and statistics does not mean that students’ academic needs are being adequately addressed.
“Whether for the teacher in a classroom or the legislator in a committee meeting room, good data systems will mean better decision-making that improves individual student performance, increases academic achievement, and raises graduation rates. One of the most effective uses of a 21st century data system is identifying each student’s educational needs and tailoring solutions that lead to academic success.
“The bill introduced by Senator Brown and his colleagues would provide funding to states, on a competitive basis, to develop the data systems to provide valuable information in a useful format to parents and educators in the 21st century. The bill also provides critical funding to every state to train teachers on the use of student data to improve classroom instruction and student learning.
“By helping states improve the way data is collected and used, the federal government makes a relatively small investment for a large return that supports the reform of our nation’s high schools.”
