Former executive director of Southern Governors’ Association brings extensive state experience to education policy and advocacy organization
Elizabeth G. Schneider has been named to the new position of Vice President for State Relations and Outreach at the Alliance for Excellent Education, it was announced today by the organization’s president, Bob Wise.
Schneider joined the Alliance in February 2005 as a consultant providing strategic, policy, and communications expertise in support of the Alliance’s mission to ensure that every child graduates from high school prepared for success in postsecondary education and the workforce. Her responsibilities include establishing relationships with state officials and community leaders to build public awareness of the high school crisis and implement solutions.
“Elizabeth’s appointment marks an important step in our work on behalf of America’s high schools,” says Wise, who is the former governor of West Virginia. “We see the states as crucial partners in improving education for all students. Elizabeth enriches and extends the work we do at the Alliance through her experience working successfully with public and private sector leaders and coordinating complex initiatives.”
Schneider came to the Alliance from the Southern Governors’ Association, where she was the executive director for 10 years, starting in 1994. At the SGA, she managed legislative initiatives, intergovernmental and stakeholder relations, coalition building, organizational communications, and financial operations and fundraising. She also successfully lobbied Congress and the White House on a wide variety of issues, resulting in additional money for Southern states, greater flexibility in utilizing funds, and enhanced federal-state cooperation. Among other major initiatives, she led the organization’s project on rural high school excellence in 2004.
From 1986-1994, Schneider assumed positions of increasing responsibility with Senator Howell Heflin (D-AL), starting as staff assistant/legislative assistant, with promotions to senior legislative assistant & advisor. Schneider is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and has taken graduate coursework at Georgetown University in literature with the emphasis on teaching writing and composition.
