Education leader joins the Alliance to ensure every child a graduate
Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, president of Shaw University, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Alliance for Excellent Education.
Before assuming leadership of Shaw University in 2003, Dr. Newsome was the dean of Howard University Divinity School for 11 years. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors that include the Distinguished Service in Education Award from the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc., and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Duke Divinity School. He is the General Editor of the Director of African American Religious Bodies, Volume 2, and the author of several scholarly articles.
“Dr. Newsome’s contributions will be vital and valuable as the Alliance continues and accelerates its work to achieve real change in America’s high schools,” said Dan Leeds, Chairman of the Board of the Alliance for Excellent Education. “He is deeply committed to the Alliance’s mission–to ensure that every child graduates from high school prepared for postsecondary education and success in life.”
