Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to President’s Proposed FY 2009 Budget
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, issued the following statement today in reaction to President Bush’s proposed FY 2009 budget:
“It’s encouraging that the president’s budget includes proposals to reform the nation’s high schools, including stronger graduation rate accountability and increases for adolescent literacy and statewide data systems. Yet the overall flat spending levels proposed today will not adequately fund the nation’s education challenges nor offer Congress incentive to improve the No Child Left Behind Act.
“Failure to invest necessary dollars now results in many billions more in higher social costs and lost economic opportunities later. I urge Congress to re-energize education reform efforts by reauthorizing NCLB so that it meets the needs of all students to ensure they graduate prepared to succeed in the twenty-first century.”
