Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to President-Elect Obama’s Economic Recovery Speech
Washington, DC–Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, reacted to President-elect Obama’s January 8 speech on his economic recovery plan:
“President-elect Obama’s speech this morning demonstrated the critical understanding that bringing financial recovery to an increasingly information-age economy requires strategic investments in education. Building and renovating schools is important; making sure that the highest-quality education takes place inside those buildings is even more crucial.
“It is absolutely essential to include education in any federal discussion of sweeping economic reform. If we consider the 1.2 million students who drop out of high school every year as nonperforming assets, then this country is experiencing an annual drop in value of around 30 percent. Ensuring that all students, throughout their years in school, receive a high-quality education and that they graduate prepared for success is the best economic stimulus.”
