Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to President Bush’s State of the Union Address
We cannot train students for a life of innovation without providing them with the resources and programs to read proficiently.
The Alliance for Excellent Education applauds President Bush for his commitment to math and science – subjects that students must master if America is to remain globally competitive. But to interest and train more students in these subjects, we must simultaneously focus on raising the ability of our high schools students to read and completely comprehend their textbooks, particularly as coursework becomes increasingly complex. Without adequate literacy skills, students cannot meet more rigorous standards, no matter the subject.
