Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to Bill Gates’ Testimony Before the Senate HELP Committee
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, issued the following statement in response to testimony by Bill Gates today before the U.S. Senate’s Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee:
“Bill Gates’ bold statement this morning that ‘Our high schools are no longer a path to opportunity and success, but a barrier to both’ should motivate every Member of Congress to immediate action. As he emphasized in his testimony, our high schools are indeed vital to our nation’s ability to compete in a global economy, and every child must graduate prepared for success in college and today’s workforce.
“Unfortunately, almost 7,000 students are dropping out of high school every school day. Later this year, when it takes up the renewal of the No Child Left Behind Act, Congress must remember Mr. Gates’ warnings and enact significant reforms creating a comprehensive program to turn around our lowest performing high schools, raise standards, improve teacher effectiveness, and make sure high school seniors can read at grade level. Failure to pay attention to Bill Gates’ warnings could have serious consequences for the nation’s economic prosperity.”
