Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Issues Support Statement for Success in the Middle Act
Federal Bill is First of its Kind Directed Solely to Improving Middle Schools
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, has issued the following statement in support of the Success in the Middle Act, introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ):
“The Success in the Middle Act demonstrates Rep. Grijalva’s commitment to improving educational outcomes for all of America’s students, including the millions in the middle grades who have been neglected for far too long.
“Only a third of the nation’s eighth graders read and write at grade level or above, which puts them at a huge disadvantage. If we want all of our kids to graduate from high school prepared for college, the modern workplace, and citizenship, we must assure that they receive the supports they need, not only in elementary school, but throughout their K–12 school years. It’s time for federal policy to focus on older students as a national priority, especially this year, with Congress considering how to strengthen the No Child Left Behind Act to improve education throughout a child’s school career.
“The Success in the Middle Act, by providing $1 billion a year in grants to states to improve schools with low-performing middle grades, will help to close the achievement gap, identify students who need extra help and get that help to them, and keep all students on the road to a diploma.
“We need to know more about what works most effectively to educate students in our middle schools, and this bill would make another $100 million available for much-needed research to support the success of middle school students.
“All of America’s students at every grade deserve a high-quality education that prepares them to move forward from grade to grade with the skills needed to succeed. I urge Congress to pass this important legislation.”
The Success in the Middle Act, which was introduced on Friday, August 3, is co-sponsored by eleven members of the U.S. House of Representatives: Bob Filner (D-CA), Gene Green (D-TX), Phil Hare (D-IL), Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX), Rush Holt (D-NJ), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Bobby Scott (D-VA), Hilda Solis (D-CA), Bennie Thompson (D-MS), and John Yarmuth (D-KY).
