Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Issues Support Statement for Graduates Act
Introduced Today in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Loebsack
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, has issued the following statement in support of the GRADUATES Act, introduced today by U.S. Representative Dave Loebsack (D-IA):
“The GRADUATES Act demonstrates Rep. Loebsack’s commitment to innovation as a catalyst for improving educational outcomes for students in the nation’s middle and high schools.
“With only 70 percent of the nation’s students graduating from high school, it’s time to rethink and redesign how we educate our students, and there’s an important federal role to play in taking on this challenge. The GRADUATES Act recognizes that communities are coming up with new ideas to improve their schools but often lack the funding to fully explore them and put them into practice. The bill will make competitive grants to fund partnerships between states and school districts and other local organizations—such as business alliances, nonprofit groups, and colleges—for programs that improve student achievement and graduation rates. The ideas will vary, but the results must demonstrate progress and must be able to be repeated in other schools.
“The GRADUATES Act provides the opportunity to discover and carry out twenty-first century solutions to the problems that exist in too many of the nation’s secondary schools. During the current renewal process for the No Child Left Behind Act, I urge Congress to include this important legislation so that the nation’s middle and high schools receive the resources they need to make sure all students receive a high-quality education .”
