Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, Issues Statement in Support of Every Student Counts Act Introduced Today by Senator Harkin
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, has issued the following statement in support of the Every Student Counts Act, introduced today by U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA):
“Sen. Harkin’s introduction of the Every Student Counts Act addresses a major obstacle to meaningful high school reform, namely understanding exactly who is and isn’t graduating from our high schools. The No Child Left Behind Act does not require a consistent and accurate measurement, and the result is that students are being lost among the various calculations states are allowed to use.
“By calling for one accurate graduation rate calculation for all states and by requiring all states to demonstrate meaningful increases in their graduation rates over time, the Every Student Counts Act will close the data loopholes that have allowed far too many of our students to drop out without being noticed.
“Sen. Harkin is to be commended for taking the reins to move federal education policy toward the system of accountability that ensures all students stay in school and graduate prepared for success.”
