Bob Wise, President of Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to “Quality Counts 2008” Report From the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center
Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, reacted to today’s release of the Quality Counts 2008 report, Tapping into Teaching: Unlocking the Key to Student Success by the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center:
“Quality Counts 2008 underscores what we at the Alliance for Excellent Education consider one of the foremost issues in education reform – attracting high-quality teachers for every classroom in the country and keeping them there.
“Teaching makes the most measurable difference in student success, but the profession suffers from a high rate of attrition, poor support systems, and not enough experienced teachers to mentor the novices. Students are dropping out of our high schools at a rate of 7,000 every school day. Ensuring every classroom, especially those in hard-to-serve communities, is led by a highly qualified, effective teacher will mean that more of our students cross the commencement stage.
“The nation is facing a crisis, but there are solutions. We can go a long way to improving our students’ futures by recruiting the best candidates to teach them and providing all teachers with mentoring and other support systems so that they, and our children, succeed.”
