Bob Wise, President of Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to Mayors’ Endorsement of Federal Legislation Supporting High School Reform

Press Release:

Bob Wise, President of Alliance for Excellent Education, Reacts to Mayors’ Endorsement of Federal Legislation Supporting High School Reform

Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, has issued the following statement on the endorsement of the Graduation Promise Act and the GRADUATES Act by the nation’s mayors during the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ annual meeting this week:

“By calling for Congress to take major action to improve high schools, the nations’ mayors directly link quality education to creating safe and economically thriving communities.

“These mayors, many in charge of our largest cities, are the first responders to America’s toughest challenges—a declining economy, inadequate health care and fighting crime. Their resolution endorses the Graduation Promise Act and the GRADUATES Act, which will use data and proven methods to identify troubled high schools and will work with local and state officials to increase graduation rates and academic success.

“The mayors’ resolution, introduced by Mayor Newsom of San Francisco, underscores that, for both their residents and their cities, the best economic stimulus package is a high school diploma. The mayors who cosponsored the resolution—Bloomberg of New York, Booker of Newark, Chavez of Albuquerque, Cicilline of Providence, Daley of Chicago, Dean of Nashville, Diaz of Miami, Gordon of Phoenix, Nutter of Philadelphia, Ryback of Minneapolis, and Villaraigosa of Los Angeles—are to be commended, as are all of the mayors who voted to support America’s high schools.”
