BUMPER STICKER ASKS PARENTS: DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A “HIGHLY QUALIFIED” TEACHER?
REPORT RECOMMENDS WAYS TO KEEP QUALIFIED TEACHERS IN HIGH-NEEDS CLASSROOMS
Research shows that teacher quality is the single greatest contributor to student achievement gains. The No Child Left Behind Act passed by Congress last year requires that every teacher in the nation must be highly qualified by the 2005-2006 school year. But what is a “highly-qualified” teacher? And how can parents tell whether their child’s teacher meets the standard?
The Alliance for Excellent Education is launching an effort designed to help parents, educators, policymakers, and a concerned public better understand the qualifications necessary for a teacher to be considered highly qualified, and to advocate for the incentives and supports necessary to attract and retain highly qualified teachers in all of America’s schools.
The first components of the High-Quality Teacher Awareness Initiative include:
- Publication and release of New-Teacher Excellence: Retaining Our Best, a report that examines what is known about effective teacher induction programs – which provide mentoring, training, and support for new teachers – and offers examples of programs around the nation that might serve as models for others. (Please NOTE: This report has been superceded by Tapping the Potential: Retaining and Developing High-Quality New Teachers, released in 2004 by the Alliance for Excellent Education.)
- Publication and release of a policy brief, Pending Federal Legislation Related to the Alliance’s Teacher and Principal Quality Initiative, which concisely lists pending federal legislation that – if passed, implemented, and funded – could help states and localities recruit and retain highly qualified teachers.
- Designating a new area on the Alliance’s popular website at which information is available about teacher quality – including a legal definition of a “highly-qualified” teacher, suggestions for questions that parents might ask as they determine the status of their child’s teacher, and links to other informative sites. This web-page will be regularly updated as new and interesting information becomes available.
- Producing and distributing a bumper-sticker designed to pique the interest of parents and others regarding highly qualified teachers. “My child has a highly qualified teacher. Does yours?“ directs the reader to the Alliance’s website for further information.
The Alliance for Excellent Education is proud to be in the fore-front of a movement to support the recruitment and retention of highly-qualified teachers for all of our nation’s classrooms.
