Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, issued the following announcement regarding the Alliance for Excellent Education’s participation in the Strong American Schools’ campaign “Ed in ’08,” funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Broad Foundation and launched today at a press conference in South Carolina:
“The Alliance for Excellent Education is pleased to be a part of ‘ED in ’08,’ the national campaign to promote Strong American Schools and assure that all of America’s students get the high-quality education that prepares them for college, the modern workplace, and citizenship. This nonpartisan public awareness campaign will help policymakers to better understand the crisis that exists in far too many of the nation’s high schools and will help to build the public will that is needed to put research and practice-proven solutions into place. “Presidential candidates, members of Congress, and other elected and appointed officials must recognize and act on the need to better educate our nation’s children throughout their K-12 school days, and to assure that students–no matter where they live, regardless of the color of their skin, and without regard to their parents’ income level– receive the supports they need to succeed in school and in life. “No longer are students in Birmingham competing with kids in Baltimore; instead, their rivals live in Bangalore and Beijing. Important as a good education is for every individual, it is also crucial that we better educate all students if the nation is to remain economically strong and secure. “Strong American Schools and its partners will work to educate all Americans about the state of America’s secondary schools and what can be done to improve them. The Alliance for Excellent Education is proud to add its voice to this important campaign.”
