Nikki McKinney joined the Alliance in January 2017 as director of policy development and federal government relations. In this role, she promotes the Alliance’s priorities before policymakers on Capitol Hill and in the U.S. Department of Education.
Before coming to the Alliance, Ms. McKinney served as deputy assistant secretary for congressional affairs at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). While there, she worked on issues related to the employment of school-aged youth, including children of immigrants, programs designed to address the educational and workforce needs of court-involved juveniles, and expanding the number of apprenticeship opportunities.
Prior to joining DOL, Ms. McKinney worked as a legislative assistant for Senator Susan M. Collins. She is a teacher by training, having taught high school social studies in public schools in Delaware and Virginia. Ms. McKinney earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science education from the University of Delaware and a master of arts degree in education policy studies from the George Washington University.
