James W. Kohlmoos
Jim Kohlmoos is cofounder and principal of EDGE Consulting Partners, a consulting firm in Arlington, Virginia, that focuses on policy, strategy, advocacy, and innovation in education. With more than four decades of experience in education leadership, Mr. Kohlmoos supports new innovative approaches in policy development, organizational management, research and development, coalition-building, marketing, and evaluation.
Prior to founding EDGE in 2013, Mr. Kohlmoos was executive director of the National Association of State Boards of Education, a nonpartisan, nonprofit membership association, where he led a national effort to support informed and active lay-citizen participation in state-level education policymaking.
As president and chief executive officer of Knowledge Alliance from 2001 to 2012, Mr. Kohlmoos guided a national advocacy program to expand support for evidence-based education and knowledge-based solutions in school improvement and policy.
Prior to joining the Knowledge Alliance in 2001, Mr. Kohlmoos was a vice president of the Implementation Group, where over a two-year period, he built an extensive bipartisan government relations practice for elementary and secondary education.
From 1993 to 2000, Mr. Kohlmoos served at the U.S. Department of Education as a deputy assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education and as a senior policy advisor. He also served on the Clinton-Gore Presidential Transition Team in 1992.
From 1977 to 1993, he served in various leadership positions at the Close Up Foundation involving social marketing, curriculum and instruction, executive management, and program development for civic education programs in the United States and around the world.
Mr. Kohlmoos began his professional career in education 1971 as a classroom teacher with the U.S. Teacher Corps in Salinas, California. He subsequently served as a teacher trainer in the Peace Corps in Malaysia for almost three years.
A native of California, Mr. Kohlmoos holds a baccalaureate in history from Stanford University (1971) and now resides in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife, Ruth, the cofounder of EDGE.
