Waco ISD Sees Positive Signs in Preventing Teacher Turnover
About half a million teachers leave the profession each year in the U.S., costing up to $2.2 billion annually, according to a 2014 study by the Alliance for Excellent Education, which also reported more than 40 percent of new teachers leave the field in their first five years. The organization is dedicated to ensuring all students graduate high school ready for success, the group’s website states. The study also states high-poverty schools experience a turnover rate of 20 percent per calendar year, 50 percent higher than affluent schools. Waco’s poverty rate is about 30 percent.
