Teachers, the other urban drop out

Across the nation there are thousands joining the ranks each year in programs like Teach for America and other urban teaching residencies, eager to tackle the achievement gap in the nation’s toughest school districts. However, the unfortunate reality is that just as quick as these teachers come in the door, they are often out. In fact, in urban districts like Baltimore, a staggering 50% of teachers leave within the first 3 years, many of them citing a lack of support, poor working conditions, and high stress levels as the reason for their departure. While this certainly poses a problem for student learning in the neediest schools, the Alliance for Excellent Education notes that teacher attrition is costing the nation as much as $2.2 billion every year. Yet even with costs this high, little is being done to prepare newcomers to take on the immense challenge of working in communities impacted by institutional racism and generational poverty
