R.I. gets boost in connecting classrooms to high-speed Internet

On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission voted to add $1.5 billion annually to the federal E-Rate program to help schools and libraries improve Internet access. Rhode Island will receive $16.3 million in E-Rate funding for wireless Internet access over the next five years. “The FCC’s decision today is the best holiday gift possible to Rhode Island’s students and teachers,” said Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education. “With increased funding for high-speed Internet connections, Rhode Island teachers and students will spend more classroom time teaching and learning rather than waiting for Web pages and videos to load.”
