Are schools failing, or do students fail themselves?

The Alliance for Excellent Education this week bemoaned pre-collegiate coursework, saying more vigorous teaching in high school might eliminate the necessity for remedial education in community colleges and reduce the college dropout rate. The Alliance’s questions are well founded and worth considering. Many students do discover they are not ready after they’ve begun college coursework. If they are unable to catch up, their failing grades very well could prompt them to quit college.
