Alliance report on Teacher Attrition featured in The Times and Democrat Editorial

Orangeburg County residents this summer are debating school district consolidation and its potential impact, asking is bigger better. They are wondering about school closings and how a merger of three districts into one would affect children in specific locales. While they are being reminded they will have significant say on any school closings under proposed legislation, and predictions are that the loss of teachers would be minimal, the fact is that keeping teachers is hard enough without any elimination of positions. Roughly half a million U.S. teachers either move or leave the profession each year — attrition that costs the United States up to $2.2 billion annually, according to a report from the Alliance for Excellent Education. This high turnover rate disproportionately affects high-poverty schools and seriously compromises the nation’s capacity to ensure that all students have access to skilled teaching, says “On the Path to Equity: Improving the Effectiveness of Beginning Teachers.”
