Alliance report on teacher attrition cited in article, ‘State colleges rank best in country’

A report by the Alliance for Excellent Education found that teacher attrition weakens the workforce and costs West Virginia between $5 and $10 million each year. During the 2007-2008 school year, an estimated 5 percent of teachers left the state, the report also found. Many of those factors are out of the control of higher education officials, but Hill is optimistic because those who receive state aid to attend college are more likely to stay in West Virginia.“The Promise encourages students to get an education here and stay here,” Hill said. He later added that a study earlier this year found that 80 percent of the scholarship’s 2002-2003 class was working in West Virginia 10 years later.
