As teachers work on lesson plans and attend professional development sessions, identifying new instructional materials and planning for the coming school year, many are thinking about how they can best implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in their classrooms. Meanwhile, parents, community members and policymakers are learning more about the standards and how they can support them in helping prepare their students and all students for college and a career. To provide important background knowledge on the standards, the Alliance for Excellent Education today released a fact-sheet on the standards and their implementation.
The short three-page fact-sheet answers the most prominent questions surrounding the CCSS. These include how the standards were developed and adopted, what instructional shifts they represent for the teaching of English language arts and math, and key issues surrounding implementation. The document provides clarity to the history, goals, and practical implications for implementation of the CCSS.
“Support for the CCSS is strong and broad,” the fact-sheet notes, listing educators, businesses, political leaders and state legislatures all as key supporters.
