High School Students Learn Through Internships

At Nashville Big Picture High School, students explore their passions in the real world setting of an internship. Students are given the opportunity to try out what interests them, see how these interests translate into a career, and gain experience in real work settings. “I hope students walk away from their internships with the ability to self-advocate, ask for help when needed, and find something that will make them passionate both inside and outside of their career,” said Laura Davis, a Big Picture teacher and advisor. Using Devices to Encourage Deeper Learning

How can teachers encourage deeper learning with personal devices? EdSurge shares several tips to leverage mobile devices for deeper learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom, including:

  1. Pique student interest and then allow students to use devices to seek answers to questions on their own.
  2. Use devices for collaboration, keeping students organized and connected during projects.
  3. Harness the power of devices in aiding real-time digital feedback for questions during presentations or demonstrations.

Students as Consultants

High Tech High Media Arts (HTHMA) is diving deeper into the roles of teachers and students. At the school, students act as consultants, observing and providing feedback to new teachers. This system is a means to open up communication and better connect teachers to students, as well as to “foster the type of positive, supportive classroom relationships that serve as the foundation for deeper learning, and challenge traditional power dynamics in the classroom.” And teachers say it’s working. In a survey, teachers responded that they “developed deeper relationships with students, interacted with students in a more positive way during class, communicated information about projects and assignments to students more clearly…and created more collaborative learning environments for students.” Read the full story on Education Week’s Learning Deeply blog:

Envision Learning Partners is seeking leaders who are working to make their districts and networks into centers of deeper learning for every student. Applications and nominations are open for the Deeper Learning Leadership Forum, a cohort of education professionals that works to address the questions and issues of educational inequity, while developing and strengthening a group of leaders in the Deeper Learning movement.
