I have worked in the school system of Lee County NC for 13 years now. I began as a cafeteria worker and was intrigued by the students. I wanted to be a part of their learning experience.
The next school year I decided to apply for a Teaching Assistant Job. Needless to say I got it! 2nd grade was my favorite age group. I worked with the same teacher in the same classroom for three years until she retired and then was replaced by another teacher of whom I am still working with today.
I watched times change over the years in the classroom. From working with a Veteran teacher of 20 plus years to a relatively new teacher of just a few years under her belt. It was a total change in teaching styles. They were both effective academically but I began to notice a shift in the students learning after the introduction of the elmo and the smartboard! We were all amazed by the new technology at our fingertips.
To be able to teach a math lesson and have hands on lessons from the smart-board was ingenious to say the least. The students focused more on the lesson in anticipation of having their turn on the smart-board. It was amazing! Everyone could participate because it was more fun to press an answer to a problem on the smart-board than to worry about what other students might think if they were wrong.
Then came along the mini laptops! Wow… we were amazed at the opportunity these little boxes of information presented to the classroom. They were used for everything. Spelling websites to study your spelling words, math sites for studying multiplication and so many more!
Today I am a Tutor in the classroom with the same teacher and the students use the computer EVERYDAY! We have found that technology is the way to a kids heart! They cannot wait to learn more about it. I am so thankful for the vision of our county!
The website for Glogster is a Glog we made in our reading groups as we read the book daily. It has recordings of each student reading a part or chapter in the book. Geronimo Stilton’s Valentine. The kids absolutely loved reading!
Under the video link there is a presentation of several Glogs the students were assigned and had to complete the assignments listed on the Glog. It worked so well for seat work or independent time! Groups ran so smoothly.
