The Alliance for Excellent Education unveiled a highly-interactive, map-based website that shows the strong link between increased educational attainment and economic gains at the national, state, and local levels. “During this time of economic uncertainty, the best economic stimulus is a high school diploma,” said Bob Wise, president of the Alliance and former governor of West Virginia. Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old Pakistani woman who was shot in the Taliban for expressing views that women have a right to education, met with President Obama on Friday. She thanked him for his support of education and boldly asked him to stop drone strikes in Pakistan. Gawker

As classrooms begin to transition to the new Common Core State Standards, some are emphasizing basic skills that will be needed to do well under the more rigorous academic standards. In some elementary school classrooms, teachers are working with their students on learning how to type; a skill that will aid them in the computer-based assessments associated with the standards. When fourth-grader Meredith Gold missed her class field trip to a national park due to the federal government shutdown, she had this to say: “At my school when we get into disagreements we compromise, work as a team, use leadership, have a positive attitude, and respect each other.
