Afternoon Announcements: Obama’s “Promise Zones”

President Obama named five “promise zones,” or cities across the US that will receive aid in navigating federal red tape and expanding economic development. These cities may also receive a leg-up in Department of Education grant competitions. Politics K-12

Fairfax, Virginia Schools Superintendent Karen Garza unveiled a budget that is sure to leave educators and parents disgruntled. It would increase class sizes and cut up to $96 million. The Washington Post

Education Week‘s annual “Quality Counts” report placed Mississippi dead last among states and Washington, DC in K-12 student achievement. Hattiesburg American.com

Oklahoma also ranks below average in the Quality Counts report, even though its academic standards are among the best in the country. The Oklahoman
