Afternoon Announcements: Obama Signs Student Loan Bill

President Obama signed a rare bipartisan bill that will keep some federal student loan interest rates from doubling this fall. About 11 million students will experience lower interest rates, saving the average undergraduate $1,500 on interest fees on this year’s loans. Education Week

By the end of August, the Department of Education is expected to release new guidelines for states to renew their No Child Left Behind waivers. The document will include how the Department will conduct waiver renewals, as well. Politics K-12

For the first time in a decade, California standardized test scores in English and math slipped this year, flummoxing educators who blame budget cuts and new national learning standards that have required curriculum changes. Los Angeles Times

Standardized test performances for Wyoming elementary and middle school students declined in every subject and every grade level from 2012 numbers, according to data released Wednesday by the Wyoming Department of Education. The drop in scores is likely a result of the state’s transition to a new set of learning standards. Wyoming Star Tribune
