Nearly seventy-five school leadership teams from districts across the Midwest gathered in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 14–15 and Austin, Texas, on July 18–19 for summits on how technology can be an effective tool to improve teaching and student learning outcomes. Organized by the Alliance for Excellent Education (the Alliance) and the U.S. Department of Education, Future Ready Schools (FRS) national summits assist school district leaders in developing student-centered personalized learning environments that are tailored to students’ unique strengths and needs.

On June 24, Future Ready Schools (FRS)—led by the Alliance for Excellent Education (the Alliance) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education—announced Future Ready Librarians, an expansion of the FRS initiative aimed at positioning librarians as leaders in the digital transformation of learning. The FRS initiative helps district leaders recognize the potential of digital tools and align necessary technologies with instructional goals to support teaching and learning.

On April 7, mayors from the New Jersey Black Mayors Alliance for Social Justice met with their respective school district superintendents to learn about the new Future Ready New Jersey certification program being developed by a consortia of organizations including the New Jersey Department of Education, the New Jersey School Boards Association, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. At the event, superintendents took the Future Ready district pledge to implement meaningful changes toward a digital learning transition that supports teachers and addresses the district’s vision for student learning.

On December 10, Alliance for Excellent Education President Bob Wise announced that more than 2,000 school district leaders, representing 16 million students, have taken the Future Ready District Pledge to personalize learning for students using effective digital learning strategies. Additionally, Wise said seventeen states have committed to developing a statewide program to support school district leaders in using Future Ready Schools (FRS) resources, including an interactive planning dashboard, for this digital transformation. Wise made the announcement at a White House event featuring the release of the National Education Technology Plan.
Alliance for Excellent Education President Bob Wise received the 2015 Friday Medal, presented by the Friday Institute at North Carolina State’s College of Education, at a ceremony on November 16. The Friday Medal honors significant, distinguished, and enduring contributions to education and beyond through advocating innovation, advancing education, and imparting inspiration.

Registration opened on January 15 for twelve regional summits to help school district leaders improve teaching and student learning outcomes through the effective use of technology. The summits are free of charge and are led by the Alliance for Excellent Education and U.S. Department of Education with support from the Leading Education by Advancing Digital (LEAD) Commission and a coalition of more than thirty-five content partners. Nearly 500 school district leaders nationwide are expected to participate directly in the summits and more than 1,300 additional district leaders will benefit.
