On January 8, 2015 the Alliance for Excellent Education hosted a webinar in its Project 24 leadership series. For years, the top-down, one-size-fits-all approach to professional learning has been prevalent in schools across the nation. Educators are often brought into large group rooms and a “sit and get” model of professional learning is utilized. Quite often, educators are left feeling frustrated and districts wonder why there is little evidence of impact in a traditional model. In recent years, the concept of educators being empowered to take charge of their own professional learning has gained momentum.
On December 16, 2014 the Alliance for Excellent Education hosted a webinar in its Project 24 leadership series. Project 24 is a systemic planning framework around the effective use of technology and digital learning to achieve the goal of "career and college readiness" for all students. The Google Hangout explored how the Dysart Unified School District in Arizona built a twenty-first-century collaborative network to support digital learning implementation.
The Students’ Voice: Empowering Transformation Webinar/EventOctober 29, 2014
Are we really listening to the voices of those who go through our educational system or are we excluding them from the debate? Classroom teacher and author, Pernille Ripp, discusses how to empower students, give them a voice, and make changes that will directly affect them every day. The time for student empowerment is now, and the myriad of tech tools available are making it easier than ever.
This webinar discusses the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which was passed by the U.S. Congress in 1998 to protect the online privacy of children. More than fifteen years later, as digital learning constitutes a critical component of education both in and out of school, COPPA has become yet another hurdle between teachers and connecting students to digital learning opportunities. What do educators need to know about this law? How can educators and school administrators successfully navigate COPPA to ensure that students are afforded the full benefits of online and blended learning opportunities? Can teachers provide consent for students to register for online websites? May students who are under thirteen years old even use Web 2.0 resources without running afoul of the law? When do school districts assume the duty of COPPA compliance?
This webinar will explore the concept of “classrooms without walls” and ways to address the needs of the nation’s current learning culture in which a variety of fundamental challenges exist, including the following: Many students understand how to use technology for online game play and social networking, but very few understand how to use the virtual world for learning; Students view much of their schooling as irrelevant, including content, context, and method of learning; Many teaching methods and styles today are text-based, yet what students experience outside of school is almost all digital in nature and therefore, the issue of trans-literacy arises. This webinar will focus on resolving the disjuncture between in-school and out-of-school learning experiences for students. Michael King, principal of Dodge City Middle School, will reconcile the language of school and youth through the use of disruptive innovations and how disruptive forms of technology have provided ways to create and interact with digital content.
Across the nation, states are proposing changes to the time dynamic in education to take advantage of the opportunities available in today’s modern technology driven world. The proposals to reimagine time include changing school calendars; providing more anywhere, anytime opportunities for students to learn outside of school; and transitioning to competency-based learning, which allows students who excel to advance only when they have mastered a subject and those who struggle to work on a unit or subject at their own pace and move on when they have mastered it. Under such a system, students become masters of their learning instead of being constrained by time restrictions. This webinar will explore what states are doing related to time and competency-based learning, including an update on West Virginia’s efforts to reimagine time through their ground-breaking strategic planning effort to personalize learning for all of their students.

West Virginia: First State to Implement Project 24 at the State Level to Personalize Learning for All Students Webinar/EventAugust 14, 2014
In 2013, West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced that the state would be the first in the nation to undertake Project 24 (P24) as a statewide effort to personalize learning for all students. P24 is a ground-breaking initiative led by the Alliance to help states and school districts plan for and effectively use technology and digital learning to ensure that students graduate from high school ready for college and a career. The Alliance is working with West Virginia to assist in their efforts. All fifty-five West Virginia county school districts and two districts run by the state completed the P24 self-assessment, which provides important information to help in the P24 planning efforts.
